the reviews say the dual core has great oc potential with the un locked multiplier, well the phenom does too, but games aren't ready for quads yet, so im leaning toward the x2.

the x2 has the same architechure as the phenom, its a quad split in two,the x 2 is also a black edition
i have all of this stuff gust want to upgrade processor
and the x2 is 80$ cheaper
this processor...AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 2.7GHz 3MB L2 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W is basically, a phenom....its made from the phenom platform....just x2... not x3 or x4....
Games are starting to use quads but at least for another year Dual is the way to go. I would agree and go with an AMD upgrade path but I wouldn't up grade until Phenom II is released in Jan. AMD's old cores are terrible overclockers compared to Intel's offerings and only phenom II will offer any competition. Early reports are saying 4GHz on air tho some others are saying 3.6GHz. Best part is after A patch for your mobo bios you can use Phenom II in AM2+ sockets and don't have to buy DDR3 ram or an AM3 mobo.
The 9800 series is a re branded 8800 series with a couple of changes but not a complete new series TBH. At most you'll "notice" a 2-3fps increase. Keep Your 8800gt for maybe another year unless your gaming on something larger than 22inch. Even then Only upgrade if you want full eye candy and to nothing less than HD4870 or GTX 260. Anything lower is a sidewards move at best.

This is a fair comparison since quads don't clock as high due to extra heat and the voltage needed to OC them. Since both are usually OC'd then the higher clock frequencies that a dual can obtain are more important for games. Dual will beat quad in games....at least for the next year. If your doing video editing etc I would go quad tho since most programs such as encoding are more multi threaded than games.
Although games are better suited to Duals atm, Phenom II quads atm are likely to be very overclock-able. Even if 2 cores ain't used the 2 that are should run faster than any AMD processor before it
